It loves to bathe in the grit of dry, sandy areas. By sand bathing, the Pokémon rids itself of dirt and moisture clinging to its body.

Sandshrew

Sandshrew belongs to the category of Ground-type Pokémon that Generation I introduces. Later on, it turns into Sandslash at the start of level 22.

Sandshrew possesses the regional form of dual-type ice or steel in Alola. When an ice stone is exposed, Sandshrew turns into Alolan Sandslash.

Characteristics

Although Sandshrew belongs to the mammalian Pokémon category running on two pedals, it can run on all fours in the anime. The yellow hide of Sandshrew is patterned like bricks and has dryness and sturdiness that goes blending in with desert sand. This way, its soft white underbelly and muzzle stay protected. Sandshrew is a cute Pokémon with an almond-shaped blue pair of eyes, triangular ears with white insides, and a pointed snout. Sandshrew’s tail is quite conical and thick. This Pokémon features a pair of long claws on each foot, while its forepaws have three sharp claws, which help it burrow.

Sandshrew’s most time is spent being hidden underground in deep caves. The only time Sandshrew emerges is when it has to be lunging or dragging in the Bug-type Pokémon passing by. It can curl quickly into a tight ball to be protective against opponents and great falls. However, Sandshrew may also be unpredictable enough to throw sand at attackers. This Pokémon has also been spotted in caves as its body can nicely absorb water to facilitate its life in the desert. Sandshrew also resides in deep underground nests, which it digs as tunnels. To prevent hard rocks from getting in the way of digging, Sandshrew removes them before digging by using its sharp claws to remove them. Sandshrew’s skin becomes wrinkly when it is too wet. But it can dry itself out with the help of the earthly heat nearby a volcano.

In Alola, this Pokémon migrated to the snowy mountains because of volcanic activity near the desert areas. Sandshrew’s body is of a subtle, icy blue color, with its belly and muzzle of cream color. Due to this, Sandshrew’s body develops a body of ice that resembles steel in hardness. Its ears and head look like an igloo’s entrance because its thicker plates form a dome shape. Sandshrew’s body became larger and heavier, with a shell of ice covering its hide because of adapting to such a climate. Such a steel-like covering provides it extra defense from predators such as Sneasel, but in this condition, it is also unable to curl into a ball like its desert counterpart. Instead, Sandshrew can burrow itself in the snow to prevent the attacks of blizzards. Attackers like Weavile can also exploit its tender underbelly. Alolan Sandshrew’s claws help it to move without slipping on icy surfaces, though it usually slides on its stomach when it has to hurry.
